Cuban Batá Drumming Workshop

The batá drum tradition, with its complex rhythms and fascinating history was born in Africa and carried to Cuba by enslaved Africans. In Cuba, batá drumming was reinvented within the Santería religion, evolving as a unique musical and philosophical tradition that has had a powerful impact on the New World. The Orisha song and dance cycles, and the rhythms that accompany them, continue as one of the richest artistic traditions in Latin America. Today the music has transcended its roots, finding a new voice in contemporary Latin Jazz in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

Join us for a workshop presentation on Cuban Batá drumming with members of the Contemporary Music Project. During the first hour students will be given a presentation about the cultural and historical significance of the drums and their ceremonial role in the religion of Santeria. For the second hour students will be divided into groups to learn Batá drumming techniques and specific Afro-Cuban rhythm patterns.
