Introduction to Djembe (West African Drumming)

No experience necessary. Discover the basics and fun of playing the West African Djembe. Learn proper hand technique and timing while practicing traditional djembe rhythms. This class is designed for someone who has never played djembe before or has had very little experience, however, all students will be challenged at their level.

The djembe drum and its rhythms originate from cultures associated with the great Malian empire of West Africa, but the instrument can be found in many contemporary bands and drum circles of the west.

No experience necessary.

Special Info

Students should bring their own djembe to class. Djembes available for rent or purchase at the Old Town School Music Stores. The ideal size drum should have a head that is 12” - 14” in diameter be be 23” - 25” tall.
