Songs of the sea! Songs sung, right here in Chicago and around the great "inland seas", during the heyday of commercial sail when Chicago was filled with sailors and two hundred sailing ships were at docks up and down the Chicago River most any day.
Join Tom Kastle, singer, actor, tall ship captain, and co-director of the Chicago Maritime Festival, for a look at the work songs of the sea, as well as the ballads, legends, and lore of the Great Lakes and the seas beyond. Also featured will be performance principles improvisation and group presentation.
There are no prerequisites and newcomers are always welcome. Sea music is inclusive by nature and embraces a number of vocal styles including Celtic and gospel as well as utilizing a host of acoustic instruments including, but not limited to, guitar, concertina, button accordion, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, tin whistle, harmonica, bodhran, and bones.
